O2 has started a trail in London for it’s LTE service more commanly known as 4G. The trail will be available for the greater parts of London such as Oxford Circus, Canary Wharf and of course – the O2 areana. It will offer mobile broadband speeds of up to 50MB per second and have the potential to go 3 times quicker.

This means that when the roll out of 4G starts in 2012/13 that mobile gaming will have the advantage of bigger download speeds and more bandwidth. It means that multiplayer games via mobile networks could potentially reach the stage of the home consoles such as PS3 and Xbox 360.

Although it may seem like impressive speeds, O2 have confirmed that when the rollout of full 4G speeds happens across the country, speeds will average 10-15MB per second. This is the UK’s average home broadband speed at the moment so while this isn’t exactly damaging, hopes of fibre-optic speeds from a mobile network may seem like an age away!
