Rumours are coming in thick and fast about the imminent demise of the Sony PSPgo for the UK. Reports are rife that Sony have ceased production of the machine in Japan and it would also appear that the Japanese Sony Store have removed the device from it’s website and Sony Store. This information is refuted however, but the clear signs that it still exists on the UK portal and is still purchasable.

Retailers are reporting a different story. The trade website, MCV have been advised that once retailers current stocks run dry, the distributors will have no replacement for the PSPgo, which coincides with the reports that production has now been discontinued. This makes sense as although the various PSPs have sold well, their marketshare overall is below 20% according to new reports and with the NGP around the corner, it’s logical to see a phased out programme for the system.

Sony still refutes the reports; however, leaves us with little clarity as a Sony official has stated:

It is a very exciting time for PlayStation portable devices. Before the end of the year we are launching NGP, our next generation portable device, which we believe will revolutionise portable gaming.

In the meantime, the current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand, especially since the introduction of our value for money, Essentials range of games and we will continue to meet that demand.

The lack of clear advise indicates that the PSPgo is on the way out…
