MAGES, the developers of Steins;Gate, have announced they are bringing a new visual novel to PC and Nintendo Switch players this year. Iwakura Aria is billed as an emotionally intense visual novel set in 1960s Japan as the country deals with the repercussions of World War 2.

Iwakura Aria is set around the mysterious Iwakura mansion, a place dripping with mystery. Players follow the story of Ichiko, a young maid who joins the family as she looks for safety and security from the outside world. She soon finds herself entangled with the beautiful daughter of the Iwakura household, Aria, before getting swept up in the secrets that fill the walls of the mansion.

With nine different endings to unlock, Iwakura Aria emphasizes the choices players make as they directly outcome of the future and the life of the protagonist. This can lead to some tense and emotionally taxing decisions.

This may be a visual novel, but Iwakura Aria gives some scope to explore. Different rooms of the mansion can be investigated to piece together key information needed to uncover the characters’ hidden secrets.

First Look at Iwakura Aria

As gamers progress, detailed drawings of what captivates Ichiko’s interests will appear in her sketchbook. They may provide some clues to what lies at the heart of the Iwakura mansion.

The visual novel is wrapped up in painterly illustrations and cut-out frames that piece together multiple images into one scene. Illustrator Hyakunen and graphic designer Fumi Nakada are responsible for the stunning artwork which we can already see in the above trailer.

The artwork and unsettling synopsis are giving The House in Fata Morgana vibes, and with the developers behind Steins;Gate working on this, Iwakura Aria is certainly a game we’re keeping our eyes on.

Iwakura Aria is coming to PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch in 2025.
