Follow up to the smash hit Borderlands, the four-player cooperative post-apocalyptic shooter that combined intense first-person mayhem with role-playing gameplay has been formally announced by 2K Games and Gearbox studios. The cell shaded First Person Shooter has also been given a release date, launching in September on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Predominantly a cooperative game for up to four players, Borderlands 2 will feature a seemless drop in/drop out system be it on the console itself or via the internet, anyone can join in at any point. The game will also support more weapons, a bigger game and more RPG elements to make Rage look like the spotty kid at school. As well as bigger weapons and a bigger game there are two new classes to get your teeth into this time.

While all four of the previous classes are featured in the game, Gearbox have tweaked the systems and introduced a new feature that effectively means that each character is unique. Maya is the new Siren in town and she has an individual primary action. The Phaselock skill allows Maya to blind enemies from range to give enough time to blat-blat them while they are stunned. Salvador – a new character in the redesigned Berzerker class is able to duel wield two weapons for a short time.

The game launches on 21st September on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and gamers who pre-order Borderlands 2 from participating retailers will gain access to the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club. This allows a download of the Gearbox Gun Pack, a Golden Key and the Vault Hunter’s Relic. The Gearbox Gun Pack is a collection of unique guns to help players begin their journey on Pandora. The Golden Key is an in-game item used to unlock a rare item in the mysterious Golden Sanctuary Loot Chest found in Borderlands 2. The Vault Hunter’s Relic is an in-game item that boosts players’ gear-hunting fortune while playing solo or teaming up with friends.
