Just 24 hours after Lucasfilm Games came back from the dead and announced an Indiana Jones game with Bethesda, they’ve only gone and told the world they’re working with Ubisoft on a “story driven, open-world” Star Wars game.

The game is in the very early stages of development so don’t we don’t expect much information will be forthcoming for a while. Although we do know it’s being handled by The Division 2 team, Massive Entertainment.

Managing director at Massive Entertainment, David Poldfelt is understandably excited for the project. Speaking on Ubisoft’s blog:

It makes me so proud of our teams to be here today and confirm that we are working on a new Star Wars game! We are extremely excited to be in a position to add new adventures to one of the richest and most fascinating sagas of our age.

Curiosity has always been an important part of who we are and what we do here at Massive. We are driven by dreaming big and taking daring challenges that match our ambition, and during the past two decades this attitude has taken us to places no one thought we could reach.

What this does mean is that EA’s exclusive grip on Star Wars games – outside of the LEGO series, is effectively over. The contract was due to expire in 2022, so we’re not expecting Ubisoft’s game before then as Dinsey/Lucasfilm & EA are honouring the agreement.

EA will still continue to develop games in the Star Wars universe, so we’re excited to see what a little competition between developer will do for the series.
