The Canadian developers – Next Level Games, have been bought by Nintendo. The sale is expected to be finalised by the 1st March 2021.

Established in 2002 in Vancouver, Next Level Games got their start with NHL Hitz Pro and the Mario Strikers series. They’ve also produced work with Marvel in the form of Spider-Man: Friend Or Foe & Captain America Super Solider.

In 2014, Nintendo and Next Level entered into an agreement that had them as a second party developer. This means the company is funded by Nintendo to work exclusively with their hardware but remained independent.

While working with the Big N, they’ve produced Luigi’s Mansion 2 & 3 which were both well received. They also created the 3DS game: Metroid Prime Federation Force, but the less said about that, the better.

Nintendo hasn’t given any financial detail on the cost of acquisition.

We do hope that with the success of Luigi’s Mansion 3 and the lack of Mario Strikers, that we will see continued investment (and perhaps another sports title from the studio).
