Videogame to movie tie ins are rarely successful and if they are – rarely good (see Resident Evil: Extinction). It has been announced however that Ubisoft have let the rights to Assassin’s Creed fall to one Michael Fassbender who will not only star in the film but also produce it. The Irish-German actor has been in such films as Shame, X-Men First Class and A Dangerous Method. All have been stunning performances and he is quickly becoming one sort after actor, but will it be any good?

If what he says is true then yes. Fassbender will play Desmond Miles, a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artefacts. So it seems they will keep with the time travelling but adapt it so that he becomes the history he studies.

Ubisoft will make the film independent from such studios like Sony and Fox so as to have complete control over the process as it does not “want to see a repeat of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” the expensive flop by Disney.

The movie is due either in 2013 or 2014 when a full script is finished and production can begin.
