Rockstar Games has finally flipped the lid and has given the world the first look at Grand Theft Auto VI. Players can expect to load up the next installment of the long-running franchise at some point in 2025. The open world game is set in the state of Leonida, which is home to Vice City, and is set to be the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series to date.

Grand Theft Auto VI is gearing up to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025, nearly 12 years after the fifth installment hit the PS3/Xbox 360. In the first trailer (embedded below for your enjoyment) looks to be produced using in-game footage, we see a stunningly detailed Vice City that teases a return to the excess of crime, strip clubs and long walks on the beach.

The trailer flips between story beats featuring the dual protagonists Lucia and Jason, along with Tiktok-esq videos showcasing gangs, car twerking and rooftop parties with scantily clad models. In the 1.31-minute video, Rockstar manages to assure gamers that GTA is well and truly back.

Lucia and Jason are set to be this generation’s Pumpkin and Honey Bunny as the couple are seen holding up a Liquor store before the trailer cuts to Lucia holding a thick wadge of cash in a car. With flashes of more elaborate heists shown as the video progresses.

We also get a brief glimpse of the map we’ll be exploring in GTA VI and it looks like we’ll be heading out of Vice City, into the wider state of Leonida. For those out of the loop, the neon-soaked Vice City is Rockstar’s interpretation of Miami, with Leonida acting as Florida state, expect to explore the gator-infested Everglades as part of the journey.

Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games had this to say about the state of the game so far:

Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.

Rockstar confirmed that the game is targeting a release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC announcement to follow later. Unsurprisingly, there will be no PS4 or Xbox One version of GTA 6. A 2025 release date may seem like an age away for players but given the scope of Grand Theft Auto VI, we think it’s a fair target. The only question that we will have to wait on is, will GTA 6 surpass the 190 million sales that GTA V has managed over the last 12 years.

Grand Theft Auto VI is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and is due for a 2025 release.
