It was revealed during last night’s PlayStation State Of Play that the open-world RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is coming to consoles and PC by the end of the year. We also had our first in-depth look into the gameplay and story surrounding Hogwarts Legacy.

To cut to the chase, here’s the 14 minute gameplay video direct from Warner Bros Games:

Hogwarts Legacy is a single player, open-world RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where you create a wizard or witch to attend school, after choosing your own house, you set about getting to know your new comrades. You won’t be rubbing shoulders with Ron, Hermione or Nevil though as this is set in the late 1800s.

Coming into school as a fifth year gives you a few headaches as you have to attend classes to catch up to your fellow students. All of the main ones are present and correct, you can learn potions, visit the the gardens for a touch of herbology or practise your spells in the Defence Against the Dark Arts class. If you fancy it, you can even learn how to fly a broom, which will be your primary mode of transport when you’r let out of the castle.

When you’re not busy learning how to be one of the greatest wizards/witches of all time then you’re free to explore Hogwarts and all it has to offer. Here, the developers Avalanche Software, have created a castle that’s primarily based on what you see in the movies as well as new areas only touched upon in the books, like the other houses common rooms. The Room of Requirement will also play a big part in the game as it’ll be your go to area to store all of your stuff, can carry out upgrades or practise your spells.

There will be areas of downtime and here is where the story comes into play. You see you’re an adept with a different kind of magic and as you explore the world outside of school, you uncover a sinister plot between the dark wizards and the pesky dwarves. Warner Bros are remaining tight-lipped and trying to get an overview of Hogwarts Legacy is neigh on impossible at this stage. What the trailer does allude to, is that you’ll be able to choose your own path and become the magician you want to be. Will you be a goody little-too-shoes or will you become bigger than Voldemort?

The hype for Hogwarts Legacy has been somewhat tampered by controversial comments by JK Rowling, leading Warner Bros to state that even though the game is licenced by her as she owns all the rights to anything to do with Harry Potter, she is not directly involved in the game’s story. Whether this statement is enough to see players take the plunge into the game is anyone’s guess.

Hogwarts Legacy is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 & Xbox One between October-December 2022.
