Developers Wales Interactive are able to develop the sequel to their first-person survival horror title Maid of Sker, thanks to investment from the Welsh Government. The original game was a hit with players when it released in 2020 for PC and consoles, with over 1.2 million downloads and a tidy haul of awards to boot. A spin-off titled Sker Ritual in 2022, but this is the first time we’re hearing about a direct sequel.

While there’s no details on what Maid of Sker 2 will look like, or even which platforms it’ll release on, the money invested from Creative Wales’s production fund is allowing the indie studio to hire talent and push forward with development. According to the statement issued by Wales Interactive, the cash allows 10 freelance developers to work on a major title, the potential for a further 8-9 permanent posts during the project period, and creating opportunities for a further 12 trainees.

The first Maid of Sker game was inspired by the Welsh story of Elisabeth Williams, a young woman imprisoned by her father to stop her from marrying the man she loved. She is said to have died of a broken heart and this tragic tale was immortalised in the Welsh folk song, ‘Y Ferch o’r Sger’ (The Maid of Sker). Wales Interactive spun this tale into a first-person gothic horror game to bring the historical story to new audiences. The follow-up will again take inspiration from Welsh heritage to build on the already established world, but what form that takes remains to be seen.

There’s no timeframe on when Maid of Sker 2 will be in the hands of players but it’s interesting to note that the funding from the Welsh government also includes the option to hire trainees. By doing this, it’ll not only be beneficial in the short term for Maid of Sker 2, but also nurture homegrown talent for those looking to make their way in the video game business.

Maid of Sker 2 is in development.
