When Octopath Traveler launched on the Nintendo Switch in 2018, Square Enix and developers Aquire, had the aim of creating a classic JRPG, with modern flourishes. It’s safe to say they’ve done that and are back with their next game, tentatively titled Project Triangle Strategy.

Project Triangle Strategy is aiming to do for Strategy RPGs what Octopath Traveler did for JRPGs, modernise while still keeping a sense of nostalgia. The game won’t launch until next year but a demo is available now. Square Enix may ask for feedback on how to improve the game going forward.

Project Triangle Strategy game puts you in a new world which is at war. Battling as Serenoa, heir of House Wolffort you command an army with the aim of bring the war to a close. Decisions throughout the game will have consequences and lead the game’s narrative.

In battle, different parts of each map will be elevated. This alters how effective certain weapons will be against the enemy adding another layer to the tried and tested S-RPG set up.

It’ll be interesting to see how this game develops over the course of the year, and with the recent releases of Disagea, Fire Emblem and now Project Triangle Strategy, it is great to see S-RPGs becoming cool again.

Project Triangle Strategy will see a release (and name change) in 2022. A demo is available to try from the Switch e-shop right now.
