Square Enix are going all out in celebrating the 30th anniversary of their underrated SaGa series. They’ve announced a HD Remaster of the original PlayStation classic and it has all-new features, scenes that were originally cut, and a new character.

SaGa Frontier Remastered brings together the 1999 cult PlayStation title to more modern consoles. Along with the amazingly looking graphics shown off in the trailer below, there is a new story bringing a new character, Fuse. There are also new character events that are missing from the original game. A “Glimmer” ability system has also been implemented which gives characters new ways to learn skills and attacks.

The series originally started as the Final Fantasy Legend series on the GameBoy. Moving to distinguish the series from Square’s flagship RPG, the next trilogy was titled Romancing SaGA and released on the SNES in the 90s. SaGa Frontier 1 & 2 followed on the PS1 and were critically received.

A PS2 entry called Unlimited SaGa then a remake of the first Romancing SaGa game. Neither fared particularly well and the series fell into a period of dormancy.

The Romancing series has had HD Remasters for PlayStation 4, Vita, Switch and PC and if you love the classic JRPG genre, are well worth your time before SaGa Frontier releases in 2021.
