Microsoft have announced a New application for the Xbox that links up the console and tv with any tablet PC. The tablet will be used as a second screen to accompany certain games, tv programmes and even movies.

This effectively turns any TV into a Smart TV as the tablet will be able to control the tv. SmartGlass looks to be a competitor to the WiiU Game Pad as it can be used as a playbook for NFL games or as an advanced map in Halo 4. It does however have one problem in that it is not a controller, so the Xbox controller is also required.

As well as this, while watching a film or tv series, the tablet will be able to bring up nuggets of information about the show or actors themselves without disrupting the show on the tv screen.

It will be interesting to see how Microsoft implements SmartGlass in future titles.
