Are you a fan of action? Obsessed with adventure? Perhaps you’re a role-playing game enthusiast? Well console gamers, your considerable backlog of titles will have to wait just that little bit longer with the release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, now available on the Playstation 5!

The Ys series has its origins dating back all the way to 1987, among the first 8-bit home computers, and chronicles the life of Adol Christin and his adventures dealing with shipwrecks and magic and demons. Developed by Nihon Falcom and published by NIS America, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was originally released in Japan on 21st July 2016. Not only was Ys VIII the first in the series to be released on the Playstation 4, but was also the very first game Falcom worked on for the PS4.

Unfortunately, for those who already own the title on PS4 there is no free upgrade to the PS5, which is a bit of a downer – but for those picking the game up fresh on current-gen, you will benefit from a slew of graphical improvements, including enhanced textures and shadow details, shorter load times, and a silky smooth 120 frames-per-second. Not too shabby!

Played from a third-person perspective, Ys VIII follows Adol as he awakens on the shore of a cursed island known, as the Isle of Seiren. Banding together a crew of colourful castaways, Adol and his companions explore the island in search of chests, survivors and mythical creatures called Primordials. As Adol and his crew begin building a ship to escape the cursed land, they uncover clues about what sank their vessel and about the mysterious woman known as Dana, a girl from a seemingly prehistoric era who appears to have a connection not only to the Isle of Seiren, but Adol’s own fate.

Ys VIII is an action RPG, where the player can spontaneously take control of the various characters on the roster, whom each have their own unique skillset and weaponry to master. As you get to grips with melee and magic attacks, coupled with a parry system and dodge mechanics, the gameplay will definitely keep you on your toes! You can explore the lands and collect materials from chests and local wildlife in order to craft stronger weapons and items for healing. Several other shipwrecked passengers can be found along the way and recruited into the budding village, where they can set up shop and provide valuable services to aid Adol on his quest, gradually turning their shipwrecked nightmare into a functioning paradise colony.

With a story acknowledged to be superior to previous titles in the series, a gorgeous anime art style indicative of so many RPGs, and boasting favourable reviews from sources such as Metacritic and Game Informer, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana will make a fun, fantasy fuelled addition to your PS5 collection!
